In 1985 at the age of 16 Rich Mayfield (now chief instructor) fell from the crux of Gogarth sustaining serious head injury. The people around him at the time were much older and very experienced climbers, who had taken the time to learn the additional skills required for just such an occurrence. Rich owes those people his life.
From that point on, Rich started reading about and practicing self rescue skills. He was formally recognized by General Sir Patrick Cordingly in 1995 for is role in saving 10 lives including his own during an adventure training that went horrendously wrong in Borneo.
